INDIANAPOLIS — The first offensive series for the Miami Dolphins resulted in an interception – with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa oversailing a pass intended for wide receiver Tyreek Hill – his first of three turnovers.
That summed up Week 1 for the Dolphins, who lost, 33-8 to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Miami gained just 43 total yards of offense in the first two quarters, picking up three first downs and averaging 2.9 yards per play.
The Dolphins didn’t score until deep in the fourth quarter, when Tagovailoa connected with running back De’Von Achane on fourth-and-goal from the Indianapolis 11-yard line, as Achane showed impressive effort to reach the end zone.
Tagovailoa then rolled to his left and found tight end Julian Hill for a successful two-point try.
Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, who beat out Anthony Richardson for the starting job, did everything he wanted to.
Jones, acquired in the offseason, completed 22 of his 29 passes for 272 yards, one touchdown and a passer rating of 115.9.
Indianapolis won a Week 1 game for the first time since the 2013 season.
Miami lost a Week 1 game for the first time in the Mike McDaniel era.
Notes:
- McDaniel said he’s not sure yet how severe the injuries are to cornerback Storm Duck (ankle) and right guard James Daniels (pectoral). Both were ruled out by the team to begin the third quarter.
- The Colts became the first team since 1977 to score on every one of their possessions in a game. Indianapolis led by as much as 30-0.
- Linebacker Bradley Chubb had Miami’s lone sack on Sunday. Chubb was playing in his first game since 2023.
- Colts rookie tight end Tyler Warren carved Miami’s secondary early. Warren, drafted No. 14 overall in April, caught seven passes for 76 yards. Jones targeted Warren nine times.
- Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill said after the game that he was checked for a concussion during the game but was fine.
