MIAMI — Quarterback Keyone Jenkins completed 15 of 21 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown, and running back Kejon Owens rushed for 122 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns as Florida International defeated Florida Atlantic 38-28 in the annual Shula Bowl on Saturday at Pitbull Stadium.
The win marked FIU’s first victory in the rivalry since 2016.
FIU jumped out to a 7-0 lead before FAU responded with a touchdown. Owls quarterback Caden Veltkamp completed 33 of 50 passes for 343 yards, but his three interceptions proved costly.
Despite running 18 more plays than FIU, FAU was penalized 11 times and was outscored 21-0 in the third quarter.
Up next: Florida International (2-1) hosts Delaware on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. Eastern at Pitbull Stadium.
Florida Atlantic (1-2) hosts Memphis on Sept. 20 at Flagler Credit Union Stadium in Boca Raton.
