MIAMI — Surrounded by decades of orange and green, Henry Gillman isn’t just a fan — he’s a Hurricanes historian.
“I am a self-proclaimed Miami Hurricanes sports fanatic and I’m a collector,” the superfan told Local 10 News.
It all started with ticket stubs back when they actually printed them.
“Going back since I was probably 10 years old, I would collect these and keep them and I never want to throw anything away,” Gillman said.
His very first game was the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day in 1984 when Miami played Nebraska.
“I actually have the ticket from that game,” he said. “The ticket -- $20.”
From there, the collection and the championships kept coming.
“The Hurricanes got their second ring, and I have the ticket stub,” Gillman said. “They did raise the prices a little bit. So it went from $20 to $30.”
Gillman’s collection goes way beyond tickets — it also includes letters from former coaches, flags, clothes and even authentic seats from the Orange Bowl.
“These are seats we would sit on -- a lot of them had no chairbacks,” Gillman explained.
But ahead of Monday’s CFP National Championship game, Gillman says it’s not about what the U was, but what the Canes could be.
“We’ve been waiting almost 25 years for this,” he said.
With Indiana in town, Gillman has one question.
“Indiana folks, who’s your daddy? Sebastian!” he said. “Go Canes! It’s all about the U!”
Miami takes on Indiana in the national championship at 7:30 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium.
