The fourth-seeded Gauff, of Delray Beach, fell behind early against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto but recovered to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Gauff had lost to Cocciaretto in their previous meeting last month, but avenged that defeat with the comeback victory.

Gauff, 22, will next face fellow American Alycia Parks, 25, in the round of 32 on Saturday.

On the men’s side, top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz continued his strong start to the season with a straight-sets win in the night session. Alcaraz defeated Brazil’s João Fonseca, 19, 6-4, 6-4.

Alcaraz, 22, the world No. 1, improved to 17-1 on the year and will face American Sebastian Korda, 25, in the round of 32 on Sunday.
