MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Jannik Sinner defeated Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Miami Open men’s singles title after rain delays totaling nearly three hours at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Sinner recovered from an early deficit in the opening set, winning three straight games behind a powerful serve and forehand. He also saved 0-40 in the fourth game with five consecutive service winners and closed out the set 6-4 despite Lehecka’s late push.
Play was halted again early in the second set, delaying action for 1 hour, 28 minutes. After the restart, Lehecka stayed competitive, using aggressive net play and strong groundstrokes to keep pace, tying the set at 3-3.
However, Sinner responded with steady serving, including a tournament total of 70 aces, and won the final two games to seal the straight-sets victory.
The 24-year-old Sinner, ranked No. 2 in the world, claimed his second Miami Open title in three years and became the first man since Roger Federer in 2017 to complete the “Sunshine Double,” winning both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season.
Sinner, who missed last year’s tournament while serving a three-month suspension, extended his Miami winning streak to 12 matches. He advanced to the final with a straight-sets win over Alexander Zverev and previously captured the Indian Wells title by defeating Daniil Medvedev.
Lehecka, ranked No. 22, was playing in his first ATP Masters 1000 final. The Czech player advanced with a semifinal win over Arthur Fils but has yet to win a set in five career meetings against Sinner.
In the women doubles final, Katerina Siniakova, of Czech Republic, and American Taylor Townsend defeated Italians Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 7-6 (0), 6-1.
March has been pretty good to these two 😎
