BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Broward County Mayor Beam Furr says the county is committed to transparency and compliance, even as Florida’s governor signals it could be among the next local governments targeted for financial scrutiny under a new state law.
Gov. Ron DeSantis recently said the state plans to “Doge 10 to 15 more counties and cities,” pointing specifically to South Florida jurisdictions.
While speaking about Miami-Dade, DeSantis said: “We have had some cooperation, I guess you’d say some cooperation ... I think it’s very possible that you see an announcement on Miami-Dade, within the next couple weeks.”
Furr, speaking remotely with This Week in South Florida host Glenna Milberg, said he was canoeing when the news broke.
When asked about the value of financial oversight, Furr agreed it has merit.
“It’s always good to make sure that you’re doing the best job possible. We do our own scrutinizing,” he said. “We have an auditor full time to look at every contract and look for any anomalies. It’s nothing new and if there’s any place we can do better, we will.”
DeSantis said this week there is “some criticism with the way Broward County has operated,” though he did not specify the source or nature of that criticism.
“It sounds pretty anonymous to me, to be honest,” Furr said. “When they decided to adopt those for the state, I guess my first thought was they would do it like the federal government did. They examined themselves. I thought the state would actually begin examining itself.”
He added, “Maybe ... because we have nine Democrats as commissioners ... that may be a reason why he’s starting there. But we go about doing things a little differently down here.”
Furr and Milberg’s conversation can be seen at the top of this page.
