This Week in South Florida: Miami mayoral candidate Emilio Gonzalez

Miami mayoral candidate Emilio Gonzalez joins this Week in South Florida

A circuit court judge ruled this week that the Miami City Commission’s decision to delay this year’s municipal elections until 2026 is unconstitutional — a legal win for mayoral candidate Emilio Gonzalez, who filed the lawsuit.

Gonzalez, one of 11 candidates running to be Miami’s next mayor, appeared on This Week in South Florida Sunday to discuss the case and what’s next as the city appeals the ruling.

“The ordinance was deemed to be unconstitutional and illegal by the judge,” Gonzalez said in part. “She studied that case and she came to the conclusion that the City of Miami violated its own charter. It violated the county’s home rule charter, and it violated the Florida Constitution.

Last month, The Miami City Commission had voted to postpone the November elections to align with state and federal cycles, arguing it would save money and boost turnout.

Milberg and Gonzalez’s conversation can be seen in the video at the top of this page.
