Union leaders discuss government shutdown impacts on South Florida

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Sunday marked day 12 of the federal government shutdown, and mass firings are now underway.

According to new court filings, roughly 4,000 employees across eight federal departments can expect to receive pink slips. Those departments include Commerce, Education, Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, and the Treasury.

It’s still not clear which specific programs could be affected.

For those who remain on the job, Friday’s paycheck will be the last until the government reopens — with the exception of active-duty service members, whom the president has promised will continue to be paid.

The effects of the shutdown are now being felt across South Florida’s federal workforce.

John Hubert, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 558 — the union representing TSA workers at South Florida airports — and Joe Rojas, a retired Federal Bureau of Prisons officer and past president of AFGE Local 506, joined “This Week in South Florida” to discuss how the shutdown is impacting workers, families, and public safety across the region.
