Chris Paul went 14 for 14 in the best shooting night in NBA playoff history, Devin Booker returned from a hamstring injury to hit a late 3-pointer and the Phoenix Suns beat the New Orleans Pelicans 115-109 on Thursday night to finish off the first-round series in six games.
Booker, Paul deliver at end, Suns hold off Warriors 107-103
Devin Booker’s two free throws with 34.2 seconds left put Phoenix ahead, Draymond Green traveled to turn it over before Chris Paul made a short jumper, and the NBA-best Phoenix Suns held off the Golden State Warriors 107-103 in a furious finish between Western Conference rivals.
Chris Paul’s Absence Could Actually Benefit Suns Long-Term
By Evan SideryDuring the Phoenix Suns’ final game before the All-Star break, Chris Paul suffered a fractured thumb avulsion. With Paul on the floor, Phoenix is scoring 115.9 points per 100 possessions — 11 points better than when Paul sits for the Suns. Before Paul arrived, though, Booker had very important moments of growth as a facilitator in the Suns’ down years. Lineup combinations featuring Booker flanked by wings is a fun small-ball idea (Booker, Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, Jae Crowder, Torrey Craig). The Suns’ trio around Booker — Ayton, Bridges, Johnson — should take pressure off the team’s 25-year-old star, but show potential moments of growth as well.
