Despite clear progress in containing the virus in some regions, especially those that saw early outbreaks, globally the number of new virus cases has soared in recent days. Late Sunday, the World Health Organization reported the largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases by its count, at more than 183,000 new cases in the latest 24 hours. A rise in the number of such cases arriving from South Asia prompted a halt to new visas for travelers from Pakistan and Bangladesh. More than 30,000 cases were reported on Friday and Saturday, with the daily totals their highest since May 1.

New York City hits a key point Monday in trying to rebound from the nations deadliest coronavirus outbreak. Office workers can return to their desks, though many wont yet. Only about 5% of Citis 13,300 New York City employees are expected back at the banks offices on July 1. JPMorgan Chase hasnt set a date yet for returning to its New York offices; Wells Fargos time frame is July 31 or later. The consulting and accounting firm plans to reopen its own New York offices in September.
