MLB's free-agent frenzy cools with big names off market
Major League Baseball's free-agent frenzy was fun while it lasted. Now that the dust has settled, some of the biggest moves weren't a huge surprise: Freddie Freeman is closer to home with the Dodgers, Nick Castellanos chose the Phillies while Trevor Story picked the Red Sox. Other signings were more unexpected: The Twins swooped in to snag star shortstop Carlos Correa while Kris Bryant surprised most of baseball after his big deal with the Rockies.

Nick Pivetta made his second start for Boston, allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts in three innings. Alex Wood worked two innings in the start for San Francisco and gave up a home run to Omar Narvaez.

Second young elephant dies from virus at New York zoo
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A second young elephant has died at a central New York zoo despite frantic efforts by staff to combat a lethal virus, zoo officials said Friday. The 5-year-old male elephant died early Friday morning, days after the sudden death Tuesday of his younger brother, Ajay. Ajay died just before his second birthday. Both died from Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus, a strain of herpes that targets Asian elephants. The zoo, one of 11 approved by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to breed Asian elephants, has six adult elephants.
Family of Black man killed by police to get nearly $6M
VALLEJO, Calif. The city of Vallejo in the San Francisco Bay area has agreed to pay $5.7 million to the family of a Black man who was shot and killed by a Vallejo police officer in 2018, city officials announced Friday. The city itself will pay the Foster family only $500,000. The Foster family is happy the truth has finally come out, Adant Pointer, a lawyer for the family, said Friday. True justice would be to see Officer McMahon walking into court as a criminal defendant. One year later, he was one of six officers who shot and killed McCoy, who was asleep in a car in a Taco Bell drive-through lane.
Dbacks bop Rockies 13-7; Blackmon hitless, drops under .500

Blackmon began the game batting an astonishing .500 for the Rockies. Blackmon was on deck when Trevor Story, who doubled twice and singled, grounded into a game-ending double play. Rockies: Following an off day Thursday, the Rockies begin a stretch of 20 games in 20 days starting Friday night in a series opener against the Texas Rangers. Colorado RHP Ryan Castellani (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is slated to start against the Rangers RHP Lance Lynn (2-0, 1.16 ERA).
Questions on reopening New York's economy baffle businesses

Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, has divided the state into 10 regions that can start to reopen businesses in phases. The governors executive orders leave it up to his administration to decide when a region has met the states standards for lifting restrictions. Last week, Cuomo announced the hiring of two experts to analyze the data and consult on reopening decisions.
Hurricanes drop opener to Louisville 87-74

Hurricanes open season with 13-point loss to Louisville
For the first 10 minutes of the game, it looked as though Miami stood a chance against the fifth ranked Louisville Cardinals. I thought our guys actually played the first ten minutes like we wanted to, said Miami head coach Jim Larraaga. From that point on, Louisville remained in front of the Hurricanes and went into halftime with a 45-26 lead. Louisville hit back-to-back three pointers with 13 minutes to go in the second half, forcing Miami to call a timeout as the Cardinals extended their lead to 28. A jumper from Darius Perry at the midway point of the second half gave Louisville their largest lead of the game at 32.
