Only Gimenez accepted Local 10′s invitation to join This Week in South Florida, but he cancelled the morning of the show citing a medical emergency. Rep. Ted Deutch, a Democrat from Boca Raton who represents Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, did join TWISF to discuss the week’s events, and their conversation can be seen at the top of this page.

Powell: US growth threatened by trade wars, global sluggishness
(CNN) - Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Wednesday depicted a robust US economy with a healthy job market and rising incomes, but warned of "noteworthy risks" that threaten future growth. "In particular, sluggish growth abroad and trade developments have weighed on the economy and pose ongoing risks," Powell said in prepared remarks for testimony before the Joint Economic Committee. Last month, the Fed cut rates for the third time this year, to a range of 1.5% and 1.75%. Powell said the series of rate cuts have helped to keep the US economy and inflation nearing its target of 2% the level the central bank considers healthy. In his remarks, he underscored his message at a press conference following last month's policy-setting meeting, pointing to persistent trade tensions and slowing global growth as a rationale for recent rate cuts.

Transcript released of testimony by top US diplomat in Ukraine
(CNN) - The top US diplomat in Ukraine told Congress that it was his "clear understanding" that US security aid to Ukraine wouldn't happen unless the country's president announced he would investigate President Donald Trump's political rivals, according to a transcript of Ambassador Bill Taylor's deposition released Wednesday. In his 15-page opening statement, Taylor explained how he was told that "everything" Ukraine wanted was conditioned on the investigation. He gave a damning account of how Trump told his appointees to establish a quid pro quo with Ukraine, trading much-needed US military assistance for political favors from Zelensky. In the wake of that testimony, Trump accused Taylor of being a "Never Trumper." In text messages to Sondland, Taylor said it would be "crazy" to withhold military aid in exchange for political help from Ukraine, suggesting a potential quid pro quo.

In the face of that scrutiny, Zuckerberg has engaged in what appears to be a public relations campaign to put himself out there more. Where exactly is the safe zone? The deal requires Kurdish militias to withdraw from a "safe zone," but that zone hasn't been properly defined. Apart from bitter fighting still ongoing for Ras Al Ain, Turkish forces control much of the gap between those towns. Fighting may not stop everywhereThe agreement doesn't necessarily stop fighting outside of the safe zone.

George Conway: White House letter on impeachment proceedings 'trash'
WASHINGTON, D.C. - George Conway, husband to White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, slammed the White House's letter refusing to cooperate in House Democrats' impeachment inquiry as "an excuse to prevent evidence, damning evidence, from reaching the public." "The thrust of (the letter) is that there are some kind of constitutional obligations that the House has failed to meet that therefore render its impeachment inquiry illegitimate and unconstitutional, which is complete nonsense, because all the Constitution says is that the House has the sole power over impeachment," he added. The accusation from Conway -- a vocal conservative lawyer who's often at odds with his wife's boss, President Donald Trump -- come as the White House looks to put pressure on House Democrats for choosing not to hold a vote to authorize a formal impeachment inquiry. A vote is not officially needed because the Democratic caucus already has more legal authority compared to past impeachment inquiries. He added that the letter "virtually guarantees" that Trump will be impeached, calling it "a disgrace to the country, a disgrace to the presidency, and a disgrace to the legal profession."

American expects 737 Max flights to return mid-January
(CNN) - American Airlines announced Wednesday that it is removing the Boeing 737 Max from its flight schedule until mid-January, an acknowledgment that the aviation industry does not expect the plane to carry passengers during the busy holiday travel season. "American expects to slowly phase in the MAX for commercial service and will increase flying on the aircraft throughout the month and into February," the airline said. "The FAA is following a thorough process, not a prescribed timeline, for returning the Boeing 737 Max to passenger service," the spokesman said. It is a setback for airlines that they will not have the 737 Max back in service in time for the busy holiday travel season. As they wait to increase capacity, they could use the 737 Max on some flights that are currently scheduled to have other equipment, such as the older, less fuel efficient 737-800.
