Tropical Depression 19 strengthened into Tropical Storm Sara Thursday afternoon in the western Caribbean. Life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flash flooding and mudslides are expected in Honduras through the weekend, the National Hurricane Center reported.

The National Hurricane Center upgraded Tropical Depression 14 on Saturday into Milton, a tropical storm forecasted to strengthen into a hurricane that will impact Florida.

A broad area of low pressure and storminess we’ve been tracking over the Gulf of Mexico this week is expected to bring persistent rounds of heavy rain to much of the Florida peninsula – including across South Florida – beginning in earnest on Sunday and lasting through much of next week.

After Hurricane Helene’s far-reaching force, meteorologists were tracking five systems. None posed an immediate threat to South Florida, but one in the southwestern Caribbean was moving north and getting stronger.

Late on Friday, the strong disturbance dubbed Potential Tropical Cyclone Four earlier in the day by the National Hurricane Center finally gained enough organization south of Cuba to be classified as a Tropical Depression. By Saturday morning, hurricane watches had been issued for Florida’s sweeping Big Bend, from just west of Apalachicola to near Crystal River.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Four strengthened into Tropical Depression 4 Friday night and is expected to eventually become Tropical Storm Debby near South Florida this weekend. As you can imagine, our weather will start to deteriorate early Saturday.

Tropical Depression 10 has strengthened along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and is now Tropical Storm Idalia.

The Atlantic hurricane season kicked off yesterday with the formation of a new Tropical Depression, only the seventh time since records began in 1851 that a tropical cyclone formed on June 1st.

Tropical Depression Lisa has moved into southern Mexico a day after making landfall as a hurricane in the Central American nation of Belize and heading inland over northern Guatemala.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – The tropical disturbance in the central Caribbean Sea became Tropical Storm Eta on Saturday. The 28th named storm of the year makes history as this is the first time Eta has been used to name a storm. Eta is expected to become a hurricane early next week as it approaches the coast of Central America later Monday and Monday night. But if the high were to weaken, or move out earlier than forecast, the storm may lose its push and stall. Tropical Storm Zeta in 2005 formed on December 30 on the other side of the Atlantic.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Tropical Depression 28 formed on Saturday near Cuba. The depression is forecast to strengthen to a tropical storm Sunday, and, although it tracks west of South Florida, it will increase heavy rain in the area. Tropical Depression #Twenty-Eight Advisory 1: 2020 Produces Yet Another Tropical Depression. It could become Tropical Storm Zeta as soon as Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Tropical Depression 28 forms and the Gulf states might be on alert again.

If winds of 40 mph or higher are identified in the circulation, it would become Tropical Storm Zeta (yes, Zeta follows Epsilon in the Greek alphabet.) This tail was one of the ingredients responsible for the very rainy stretch of weather in South Florida early this week. While that plays out, the disturbance – likely as a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Zeta – is forecast to move slowly in the direction of extreme western Cuba, but stay in the Caribbean today and tomorrow. Be ready for fast-developing local flooding if the heavy rain materializes. Whether it will make it to South Florida late next week is an open question.

The disturbance we’ve been following for the last week has finally organized into Tropical Depression 22 in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. It’s forecast to become Tropical Storm Wilfred today or tomorrow as it creeps to the north offshore of Mexico and extreme South Texas. It would become Tropical Storm Paulette a second time if its winds reached 40 mph. Disturbance #1 is well on its way to becoming a tropical storm. There is a tropical storm trying to form within a large non-tropical low.

Gonzalo will move through the eastern Caribbean islands – Hurricane Watches are in effect. And Tropical Depression Eight in the Gulf of Mexico is forecast to cross the Texas coast, possibly as Tropical Storm Hanna. If thunderstorms continue to organize around the center of circulation, the system could quickly spin up into Tropical Storm Hanna. Well out in the Atlantic, just over 1,000 miles east of the Caribbean islands, Tropical Storm Gonzalo is organizing in fits and starts. Tropical Storm Gonzalo, July 23 8 a.m. advisory.
