MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A fatal motorcycle crash brought traffic to a standstill on southbound Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade Thursday morning, temporarily shutting down all lanes near 125th Street and causing major delays stretching as far back as Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:06 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A FHP spokesperson said a black Suzuki motorcycle was traveling south on I-95 near Northwest 103rd Street when the rider lost control and collided with a black Kia sedan.
The motorcyclist, a man whose age or identity has not been disclosed, was ejected and came to rest on the roadway. Authorities said he died at the scene from his injuries.
Authorities diverted drivers off the highway at 125th Street while investigators worked the scene. Commuters were urged to use U.S. 1 or Florida’s Turnpike to bypass the gridlock.
By midmorning, the scene was beginning to clear, with only a few police vehicles remaining. However, heavy delays persisted, with traffic inching forward in some areas.
Motorists looking to re-enter I-95 were advised to do so at 79th Street via Northwest Seventh Avenue to avoid the worst of the congestion.
No other details about the crash were immediately released.
