It’s a gloomy day with an overcast sky and occasional bands of light rain moving out of the Florida Keys. Temperatures are not too chilly despite the lack of sunshine in the upper 60s. This rain and clouds will break up around sunset with a quieter Friday night.
The powerful Arctic cold front is expected to cross into South Florida early Saturday afternoon, bringing in wind gusts around 40 mph. Our temperatures will start to fall from the upper 60s midday to the 50s by sunset. We will bottom out around 35° Sunday morning, making it the coldest air we have felt in more than 15 years. If we were to fall just one more degree to 34°, it would be the coldest since Christmas morning of 1989.
What will make the frigid weather feel even colder will be gusty north winds. The stronger the wind, the faster it pulls our body heat away from our skin. Wind chills could drop as low as the middle 20s Sunday morning. We’re not expected a freeze in Broward, Miami-Dade, or the Keys, but frost will be possible. Bring any sensitive plants inside or cover them with a light sheet overnight. High temperatures on Sunday will struggle to reach the middle 50s, even with full sunshine. Another very cold night is on the way with temperatures falling to around 37° Monday morning. It could take as long as Wednesday to see the 70s again.
