MIRAMAR, Fla. — Juici Pattis, a Jamaican restaurant chain with seven locations in Broward County, is accepting disaster relief donations for the Caribbean island dealing with Hurricane Melissa.
As many Jamaican Americans have been, Annette Kidd, a Juici Pattis franchise owner in Miramar, said she is using WhatsApp to stay in touch with her family in Jamaica.
Millicent McBean, who was working at Kidd’s restaurant at 11735 City Hall Promenade, understands the anguish. Kidd has a television on so they can watch the news.
“I’m from St. Mary, and the eye is going in my direction. All my sisters, I have a house there,” McBean said. “I’m praying for them, just spoke to them this morning.”
Oliver Meir, the consul general of Jamaica in Miami, is a Juici Pattis customer. He was urging people to remind their relatives to secure their documents and take shelter.
“Getting in action mode,” Meir said. “We have a very large community.”
Ewan Simpson, a Juici Pattis customer who lives in Kingston, said he was in South Florida for business, and he can’t return since the hurricane has impacted flights.
“Most of my family is in the central part of Jamaica, which is Clarendon, so they are anxious,” Simpson said. “A lot of it is flat land; a lot of it suffers from flooding.”
