Homestead farmer reports ‘tiresome’ and ‘stressful’ Florida freeze

Florida freeze impacts some Homestead farmers' crops

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Farmers in southern Miami-Dade County’s Homestead area reported on Monday that the Florida freeze had damaged some crops.

The temperatures hit about 30 degrees in some areas. David Torbert, a farmer, said he had not experienced anything like it before.

“It has been tiresome; it has been a lot of work ... Our guys have done a great job. They have done,” Torbert said on Monday morning about the preventive measures.

Just a street over from Torbert Farms’ green bean fields, frost impacted Torbert’s squash — one of several crops in the area at risk of damage.

“It has been stressful ... If you have a heavy amount of frost that plant may eventually die,” Torbert said about the process of assessing the damage.

The loss risk comes as some farm workers fear the state and federal immigration crackdown, and farmers who are hoping to apply for aid learn about a temporary federal government shutdown.
