DAVIE, Fla. — Did you know one in six South Floridians experiences food insecurity? That’s roughly 16 percent of the population.
It’s why every year, Local 10 News raises awareness about this critical issue through our Food for Thought campaign.
As September is Hunger Action Month, Local 10 is highlighting one local nonprofit that is feeding the need.
“There’s a lot of people struggling and they all really need our help,” said Ross Adel, Director of Operations at the Dorit & Ben J. Genet Cupboard of Goodman JFS in Davie.
Adel is on the front lines of food insecurity.
The organization provides kosher and healthy food choices primarily to Jewish families and Holocaust survivors, but they never turn anyone away, even when supplies are low.
“There was a time when I was receiving three deliveries per month,” Adel said. “We really never know what we’re going to get or not get, and we’re just grateful for what is still able to come.”
Like most food nonprofits, the Cupboard has experienced a decline in funding and resources. In spite of that, they continue to serve 600 families, which translates to 1,100 individuals per month.
Seventy-year-old Iris Horovitz has been coming to the Cupboard for four years.
“I have nine people in the household, with kids, grandkids, so everything helps,” Horovitz said.
The Cupboard relies heavily on private food donations, and Local 10’s Food for Thought partners at Publix are a mainstay in this effort.
“Being out here today and actually being able to pack boxes with our associates and know that they are going out to the community to help our neighbors in need is so important to us,” said Publix media relations manager Lindsey Willis.
And it’s important to the ongoing mission of this organization.
“Every can that comes in here, every dollar that comes in here is just one more individual that we can feed,” Adel said.
The Cupboard delivers roughly 350 meals every month to Holocaust survivors, disabled adults and seniors. It also provides special deliveries three times a year on Jewish holidays.
