HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — One in six South Floridians experiences food insecurity, a challenge that leaves thousands of families struggling to put meals on the table.
For 31-year-old Kianna Myers, a single mother of three boys, that reality has meant making tough choices.
“If it comes between you and your boys and food. Oh, they are going to eat first,” Myers said.
But thanks to Serving with Grace, a Hollywood-based nonprofit, Myers said she doesn’t have to make that choice alone.
“Never had to choose because of places like this,” she said.
Founded in 2016 and led by executive director Evangeline Clarke, Serving with Grace provides groceries, clothing and other essentials to families across Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
Clarke, who was raised in a low-income household, said her own experiences drive the mission.
“We don’t call them clients. We don’t call them guests. We call them our families, because that’s what they mean to us,” Clarke said. “If you can worry about one less thing, we feel that we have done our part.”
The organization has expanded in recent years.
Grace’s Closet opened in 2019 to provide clothing, and in 2022 the Corner Pantry began serving families with food and household goods. Today, Serving with Grace helps up to 200 families every month.
“This is a blessing to us and we’re grateful for that,” Clarke said.
This week, the nonprofit received support of its own.
Publix donated several boxes of nonperishables and refrigerated proteins as part of Local 10’s Food for Thought initiative. Volunteers stocked shelves with items ranging from cereal and peanut butter to sauces and pasta.
“We constantly get involved in organizations like this, Food for Thought, other nonprofits throughout the year where we can give back and truly make a difference,” said Lindsey Willis, Publix media relations manager.
Serving with Grace also provides diapers, school supplies and household goods. Families are assisted by appointment.
