Carnaval Miami, Calle Ocho Music Festival kick off with theme of unity

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Carnaval Miami and the iconic Calle Ocho Music Festival officially kicked off their 2026 celebration on Tuesday with a theme that organizers say captures the spirit of the city: “Mi Gente,” or “My People.”

This year’s events spotlight Miami’s cultural diversity and sense of community, featuring Puerto Rican and Cuban singer Guaynaa as the King of Carnaval.

The official festival poster was designed by Nicaraguan artist María Fernanda, highlighting the multicultural influences that define South Florida.

Organizers say the theme emphasizes togetherness and celebrates the region’s role as a melting pot of Latin cultures.

Carnaval Miami and the Calle Ocho Festival rank among the largest Latin cultural celebrations in the United States. Calle Ocho alone can draw more than half a million attendees each year.

Beyond music and food, the events also serve a philanthropic mission.

Proceeds raised annually benefit the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, supporting scholarships, summer camps and community programs for seniors.

Funds from last year’s festival helped distribute more than 10,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students, organizers said.

Attendees this year can expect familiar staples, including traditional Latin cuisine, live music and entertainment showcasing cultures from across the region.

“This is where culture comes alive — the music, the food — it tells the story of mi gente, our flavor and what we give back to our community,” said Lourdes Mola, vice president of Latin business development for Seminole Gaming.

With events beginning in March, organizers say festivities are already underway and will continue in the lead-up to the main Calle Ocho celebration.
