MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Two men who confessed to stealing dozens of rims and tires from cars in Miami-Dade County were going to have to prove that their bond wasn’t from criminal proceeds, records show.
Detectives were investigating more than 25 thefts of mostly Toyotas, usually from 3 to 6 a.m., since Sept. 26. Some of the cases included surveillance video showing the thieves in a black Dodge Ram TRX and sometimes also a red Honda Civic, records show.
The thieves, sometimes two and sometimes three of them, stole all four wheels, consisting of both rims and tires, and these “were removed within a matter of minutes,” which detectives wrote showed “a high degree of coordination and efficiency,” records show.
Detectives arrested Dayron Mendez and David Mendez at 9:35 a.m. on Oct. 22 at their home in Miami Lakes, and found clothing worn during the thefts, tools, stolen rims and tires, and other evidence, according to the arrest reports.
Daryon Mendez, 29, and David Mendez, 33, confessed to “selling the items for cash,” according to deputies’ arrest reports in the cases.
Dayron Mendez faces 15 counts of third-degree felony grand theft of motor vehicle parts in separate cases, fleeing and eluding police, and possession of a controlled substance. He was on probation for an attempted grand theft case.
David Mendez faces 20 counts of third-degree felony grand theft of motor vehicle parts in separate cases, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use.
Inmate records show both were at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with bond holds.
