Videos surfaced on Thursday as evidence of Hurricane Melissa’s path of destruction in western Jamaica, southeastern Cuba, and the southeast Bahamas.
Dana Morris Dixon, Jamaica’s education minister, said members of Jamaica’s defense force had a helicopter to retrieve the bodies of people who died during the hurricane.
Most of the videos showing houses damaged and areas flooded were in Jamaica’s St. Elizabeth parish. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said ground zero was in the coastal town of Black River.
After making landfall as a Category 5 hurricane in Jamaica, a weaker hurricane impacted Cuba. President Miguel Díaz-Canel said the preparations paid off since the hurricane did not cause any deaths.
Cuban officials said the provinces that experienced the most property damage were Santiago, Granma, Holguín, Las Tunas, and Guantánamo. The U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay had evacuations, and personnel returned to their living quarters, according to a Facebook post.
Bahamian authorities announced evacuating 1,400 people. The storm was set to move north and near western Bermuda.
