MIAMI — More than 18,000 runners from all over the world participated in the Life Time Marathon and Half events on Sunday morning in Miami-Dade County.
Police officers closed streets in Coconut Grove, Brickell, Downtown Miami, and Miami Beach to protect the runners during the event.
Tracy Barlow, of London, was the winner of the women’s half-marathon event. She works as a critical care nurse.
“It’s a really tough race as well because it is so hot and humid,” Welsh said. “It’s definitely a battle, a mental battle, but actually to cross and come first.”
Lucas Perez won his first marathon for runners in the 18-and-under category.
“I started not being able to run a mile straight less than a year ago,” Perez said.
Filippo Tenca said he traveled to Miami to cheer for a friend, who was running a marathon.
“I ran two, and I know how important it is to have someone outside of the race to support you, cheer you on,” Tenca said. “It’s unbelievable.”
Miami DJ John Summit said he didn’t get much sleep after working in the Bahamas, and he got off a boat and ran the half-marathon.
“So fun everyone coming together like this, but not going to lie,” Summit said, “that was a pretty tough half-marathon. It’s hot here.”
Mauricio Gonzalez, a Colombian runner, won the men’s half-marathon.
WOMEN’S MARATHON
Christina Welsh, of St Petersburg, was the first to complete the women’s marathon in 2 hours, 42 minutes, and 14 seconds.
Ellie Stevens, of Las Vegas, ranked second after she finished in 2 hours, 45 minutes, and 43 seconds. Hanna Hauschild, of Miami Beach, was third in 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 27 seconds.
MEN’S MARATHON
The winner of the men’s marathon was Dominic Ondoro, of Kenya, with 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 47 seconds.
Bradley Makuvire, of El Paso, ranked second with 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 12 seconds.
Ederson Pereira, a Brazilian distance runner, placed third with 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 18.
