MIAMI — A 29-year-old man who was born in Guatemala and lives in Downtown Miami was behind bars on Thursday afternoon with a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.
Miami police officers reported working with the U.S. Secret Service along the Venetian Causeway during Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit on Wednesday, when Tobias Gonzalez failed to follow orders at a checkpoint.
Gonzalez, who was riding an electric bicycle, made eye contact with a police officer, who reported shouting “loud verbal commands to stop,” but kept on going, according to a police arrest report.
Right before the bridge to San Marco Island, Gonzalez was “going through the opposite side of traffic” when another police officer stood in his path and waved his arm to also order him to stop, according to police.
Gonzalez “lost control of the ebike and fell off” and “began to run eastbound on foot over the bridge,” but a police officer was able to catch up to him, push him to the ground, and arrest him, according to police.
Gonzalez had “scrapes on both knees, his right knuckles, and pain in his left forearm,” so Miami fire rescue personnel treated him, according to a Miami police arrest report.
Miami police officers arrested Gonzalez shortly after 3:35 p.m. on Wednesday at 1000 Venetian Way, according to a police officer’s arrest report.
Miami-Dade County corrections booked Gonzalez, who is 5-feet 11-inches tall, shortly after 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to county inmate records.
Gonzalez faced a charge of resisting an officer without violence to his person, and he also had a warrant case for failure to obey a police officer, records show.
