Sian Andre Spence, 47, of Fort Lauderdale, is facing three animal cruelty charges in connection with the Jan. 2 incident.

Video aired by Local 10 News on Monday shows that the three Shih Tzu-poodles, a mother named “Ginger” and her two puppies “DJ” and “Junior,” were in the front yard barking from behind a fence when the mailman sprayed them.

Owner Bianca Green called the mailman’s actions “malicious” and unnecessary and said on Wednesday that she was glad to hear of Spence’s arrest.

In court on Thursday, Spence’s attorney said his client was “startled” by the dogs.

The judge pointed out that they were behind a fence, ordering Spence to have no firearms and no animals after setting a $4,500 bond.

A spokesperson for the United States Postal Service said Spence “remains employed by the Postal Service and is not currently on active duty.”

Spence posted the bond and left jail Thursday night.

He spoke with Local 10 News after bonding out.

“My response is, no comment -- my lawyers will be handling it,” he said.
