DeSantis suspends state attorney refusing to prosecute abortion cases

TAMPA – Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended the Hillsborough County State Attorney on Thursday for refusing to prosecute abortion-related cases.

DeSantis accused Andrew Warren of “flagrantly” violating his oath of office by putting himself “above the law.”

DeSantis also said Warren was “displaying a lack of competence” with his decision.

DeSantis appointed Hillsborough Circuit Judge Susan Lopez to replace Warren, a former federal prosecutor.

Florida legislators banned abortions for women who have been pregnant for longer than 15 weeks. The U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe vs. Wade affirmed abortion is no longer a constitutional right.
