Woman surrenders to face charges over fatal hit-and-run crash in Broward

A woman surrendered on Monday to face charges in Broward County for a hit-and-run crash that killed a 35-year-old man.

Records showed Janae Shaniece Lewis, 28, was at the Broward County main jail on Tuesday morning in Fort Lauderdale and the arresting agency was the Miramar Police Department.

Detectives accused Lewis, of North Augusta, South Carolina, of running over Silvio Jose Ortega Martinez on Nov. 17, near the intersection of South 65 Avenue and Pembroke Road.

Detectives seized the rental white Chevy Malibu that Lewis was accused of driving when she struck and killed Ortega, who worked as a mechanic, according to Tania Rues, a spokesperson for the department.

Lewis is facing charges of tampering with evidence and failure to stop after an accident involving a death.

Detectives were asking anyone with information about the case to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
