Fort Lauderdale breaks ground on new $100M police headquarters

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean J. Trantalis celebrated Thursday during a ceremony to break ground on the police department’s new three-story 192,263-square-foot headquarters.

Chief Patrick Lynn said the city’s police officers were looking forward to moving out of the 85,000-square-foot headquarters, which were built in the 1950s.

“It’s not just about space; it’s about public safety,” Trantalis said.

The new $100 million headquarters will feature cutting-edge technology. It includes a 5,270-square-foot community center, a firearm training facility, an evidence warehouse, and a safer parking garage.

“We are elated, a long time in the works,” Lynn said.

The city’s voters approved the bond referendum to cover the cost in 2019. The old building will be demolished. Officials expect the project to be completed in 2025.
