Attorney general warns about sweepstakes scams

MIAMI – Thieves pretending to work for the Florida Lottery are scamming victims who don’t know that legitimate sweepstakes will not require winners to pay anything to receive a prize or require to keep the prize confidential.

In an effort to curtail their efforts, Attorney General Ashley Moody warned the public on Monday about the different ways victims are falling prey to sweepstakes scams.

“Receiving a message that you have won a large cash prize can be exciting, but it’s also likely a scam,” Moody said in a statement on Monday.

Moody’s tips: Do not open any links in messages. Never provide banking or personal information over the phone to an unsolicited caller. Beware of mail with the same requests.

Moody asked anyone who has been victimized to call her office at To report a lottery or sweepstakes scam, contact the Florida Attorney General’s Office at 1-866-966-7226 or file a complaint on this site and with the Postal Inspection Service on this site.
