Man found dead in trash before Christmas Day birthday was wanted for shooting wife

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man found dead in a trash can in southwest Miami-Dade Tuesday was wanted by authorities on an attempted murder charge, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

Miami-Dade police had been seeking Armando Benavides, who would have turned 55 on Christmas Day, in connection with a shooting that wounded his estranged wife Monday night.

She suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A worker found Benavides’ body the next day in the garbage bin Southwest 85th Street and 161st Place, a residential neighborhood in the county’s West Kendall area.

Police believe Benavides died by suicide after crawling in someone else’s trash bin and shooting himself. He did not live in the neighborhood.

Authorities said they found a gun in the bin.

He had been living with his ex-wife and their two children, one adult and the other 17 years old, according to police.
