‘Sold his morals’: BSO jailer accused of working with inmate’s wife to smuggle in drugs, vapes

All ‘for a few measly dollars,’ Sheriff Gregory Tony says

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A Broward Sheriff’s Office detention deputy found himself on the other side of the jail bars Friday after his own agency accused him of working with an inmate — and the inmate’s wife — to smuggle drugs, cigarettes and vape pens into BSO’s Paul Rein Detention Facility.

The jail is located at 2421 NW 16th St. in Pompano Beach. That’s where a BSO spokesperson said 28-year-old Deputy Anderson Jean worked with inmate Adrian Whipple to smuggle in the goods.

Whipple, 38, is currently serving a state sentence for charges including armed robbery and aggravated battery. Now, he’s added a smuggling charge to his long list of criminal counts.

Authorities said the investigation into contraband being brought into the facility began in June and revealed that Whipple “was selling vape pens, marijuana, Molly and cigarettes” to other inmates, brought in by Jean.

According to BSO, the agency’s investigation revealed a “series of Cash App payments” to Jean from Whipple’s wife for amounts ranging from $20 to $500 and jail phone calls from Whipple instructing his wife to send money to Jean.

Authorities said they also found a vape pen on Jean in September and he “admitted to providing contraband, including drugs, to Whipple in exchange for money,” leading to his suspension with pay.

Jean would meet with Whipple’s wife off-duty to get the Molly, bring it into jail and give it to Whipple, who would then sell it in the facility, deputies said.

“Molly” is slang for MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.

“What this detention deputy is suspected of doing is reprehensible. Detention deputies take an oath to uphold the law and this deputy sold his morals and values for a few measly dollars while introducing dangerous drugs into a secure detention facility,” Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a news release announcing the arrest Friday. “As long as I am sheriff, this agency will remain steadfastly committed to transparency and accountability and to rooting out deputies who tarnish the badge.”

Jean now faces two counts of introducing contraband into a detention facility, one count of unlawful compensation and one count of criminal attempt to solicit.

He’s being held at the BSO Main Jail on a $13,000 bond, according to jail records.

According to BSO, he was suspended without pay following his arrest.
