MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 24-year-old man from southwest Miami-Dade was arrested Thursday after he attacked his girlfriend and her 11-year-old son, authorities said.

According to his arrest report, the attacks occurred on Dec. 16 at the Fair Oaks Apartments, located in the 29000 block of South Dixie Highway.

Miami-Dade police said officers arrived at the home that evening to find the woman suffering from several deep cuts on both sides of her neck, cuts to both sides of her face and a cut to her left eye. Her left ear was partially severed.

According to the report, the victim’s 11-year-old son had bruising around his neck and “blood in his eyes consistent with suffering from strangulation.” He also had a shallow puncture wound to the top of his head, according to the report.

The mother and son were transported to Jackson South Medical Center for treatment.

Police said detectives later interviewed the mother, who told them that she and her boyfriend, Demar Turruellas, were having a conversation in her kitchen that evolved into a verbal dispute.

She said Turruellas then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her in the face and neck, eventually knocking her to the floor, the report stated.

According to the report, the victim’s son came out of his bedroom during the attack and tried to stop Turruellas from hurting his mother, but Turruellas knocked the boy to the ground, got on top of him and began choking him.

“I’m going to kill your son,” Turruellas told his girlfriend, according to the report.

The woman’s son told police that he felt a sharp pain on the top of his head during the attack and pretended to be dead in hopes that Turruellas would stop harming him.

He said he ran out of the apartment to get help once Turruellas refocused his efforts on his mother.

Police said the woman told them she was eventually able to get up from the floor and Turruellas chased after her.

She said he left her apartment a short time later, at which time she ran out of the apartment to seek help.

According to the report, hospital staff informed detectives that the stab wounds to the woman’s neck impacted her arteries and required extensive surgery.

Turruellas, who was on probation at the time of the attacks, was taken into custody Thursday when he went to meet his probation officer, authorities said.

He faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated child abuse.

As of Friday, Turruellas was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Further details about what the couple was initially arguing about were not disclosed in the arrest report.
