Man wanted in Ohio boat manslaughter caught in South Florida, feds say

Alen Gorishti (BSO)

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A fugitive wanted by the U.S. Coast Guard in connection with a deadly boat crash in Ohio was caught in South Florida over the weekend, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Agents had been looking for Alen Gorishti, 33, after he was charged in 2021 with seaman’s manslaughter and false statements in connection with the deadly Nov. 6, 2016 crash on Lake Erie.

Authorities said Gorishti collided with an anchored boat two miles off the coast of the Cleveland suburb of Fairport Harbor, sending two men into the water. One of the men, identified as Roger R. Burton, was killed.

According to the release, authorities located Gorishti after he stopped at the Miami International Airport on a return flight from Colombia on Sunday.

Prosecutors said agents had recently located him living in Canada and had gotten word that he had traveled to South America.

Gorishti was taken north to Broward County to be held on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Jail records show he’s being held in the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail as of Wednesday, awaiting extradition to Ohio.
