Police identify 18-year-old student accused of bringing gun to Broward school

Stranahan High School student faces charges

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police officers identified the student who was arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to school in Broward County as Jamar Ali Ross, who just turned 18 years old in November.

Police officers arrested Ross on Friday after security reported finding him in possession of a handgun while at Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale.

The school at 1800 SW Fifth Place was on lockdown.

Broward Sheriff’s Office correctional deputies booked Ross on charges of grand theft of a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm on school property, and disrupting a school function.

Casey Liening, a public information specialist for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, reported Friday night that the case was still under investigation.

Ross appeared in a Broward County courtroom Saturday where a judge set his total bond at $15,000.

State prosecutors wanted to put $100,000 bond on each count but those were reduced by the presiding judge.

The judge also said Ross could return to school with permission from the school’s administrators.

Detectives were asking anyone with information about the case to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
