Man with checkered driving history accused of fatal Deerfield Beach hit-and-run

Chase Kellerman (BSO)

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Chase Allen Kellerman said he thought he hit a shopping cart while driving and didn’t end up stopping until he got a few blocks down the road, according to deputies.

They say Kellerman did, in fact, hit a shopping cart — but he also hit the man pushing it, killing him. The 35-year-old is now facing a felony charge in connection with the deadly Deerfield Beach crash.

According to a Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest report released Wednesday, the crash happened just after midnight Sunday in the 1300 block of South Federal Highway.

Kellerman, of Pompano Beach, hit the victim with his Chevrolet Silverado as he pushed his shopping cart across the road in an attempt to cross it, deputies said in the report, flinging him across the road.

Deputies said Kellerman kept on driving and only checked his vehicle for damage a few intersections down the road. They said they found the victim’s blood on car parts strewn about the crash scene.

On Monday, well after the crash, BSO Detective Chandler Greetham wrote that he got word that Kellerman came to the agency’s Deerfield Beach station to report the wreck.

After explaining that he thought he just hit a shopping cart, Greetham wrote that Kellerman “drove home knowing he was involved in a crash.”

Kellerman has a checkered history on South Florida roadways, according to online court records.

Those records show a long list of traffic infractions and criminal traffic cases in both Broward and Palm Beach counties, including speeding tickets and arrests for driving on a suspended license.

He also pleaded no contest to failure to use due care after a 2014 crash on Interstate 95 in Broward County.

After his arrest Monday, a judge found probable cause to charge Kellerman with failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death, a first-degree felony.

He was no longer listed in Broward jail records as of Wednesday.
