Trike thief beats victim with coconut at South Florida Winn-Dixie, deputies say

Sheriff: Suspect also bit victim and spat on deputy

Amado Dominguez Quevedo (MCSO)

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – A man who confronted a suspect who stole his tricycle outside of a Florida Keys supermarket wound up on the wrong end of a coconut Tuesday afternoon, according to deputies.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Amado Dominguez Quevedo, 59, also bit the victim during the beating on Big Pine Key. He’s facing multiple criminal charges.

An MCSO arrest report states that deputies were called to the Winn-Dixie at 251 Key Deer Blvd. at around 3:15 p.m. for a fight in progress.

It states that fight ensued after a man confronted Dominguez Quevedo for stealing the trike, which the victim had bought on Amazon for $260.

Dominguez Quevedo became “violent” soon after, wielding a coconut and striking the victim in the head with it repeatedly, deputies said.

He also bit the victim “several times,” the report states. Deputies said the victim was hurt in the attack, but not seriously; he was treated at the scene by fire rescue crews.

Dominguez Quevedo’s belligerence continued as deputies tried to take him into custody, according to the report. Deputies said he purposely “became limp” and used his dead body weight to obstruct them as they tried to place him in a patrol car.

He then spat in a deputy’s face, the report states.

Tuesday’s incident was not Dominguez Quevedo’s first time causing trouble at the very same Winn-Dixie, the report states. According to deputies, on Feb. 4, he hit a store worker in the face, but that employee declined to pursue charges.

Dominguez Quevedo, who — perhaps appropriately — lives on Coconut Palm Drive on Big Pine Key, was jailed Tuesday on felony charges of aggravated battery and battery on an officer, as well as misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and petit theft.

He was being held in MCSO’s Key West jail facility without bond as of Wednesday afternoon.
