BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – Just days after helping bust a woman for drug possession in the Florida Keys, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office K9 Coral is at it again. This time she alerted deputies to drugs inside a Lexus and a BMW that were pulled over Monday afternoon on Big Pine Key. (Monroe County Sheriff's Office)According to authorities, deputies spotted Howard driving a black BMW south on U.S. 1 around 2:40 p.m. Monday. (Monroe County Sheriff's Office)Dyer is Howard’s boyfriend, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities said additional deputies were called to the scene along with K9 Coral, who alerted them to drugs in the Lexus and BMW.
Woman with warrants in Broward arrested after series of violent incidents in Florida Keys
PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – A 41-year-old woman, who Monroe County Sheriff’s Office discovered had outstanding warrants in Broward County for prostitution, drugs and trespassing, was arrested Friday night after a series of violent incidents. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Deputies said they were called to a scene on Geranium Drive at 10:25 p.m. of reports of a suspicious person who attacked someone. The man who called sheriff’s deputies said he saw a blonde woman lying in the street and when he went to check on her, she slapped a drink out of his hand and hit him. Tweed faces charges of two counts of a battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of resisting with violence, two counts of resisting arrest without violence and battery. Her warrants out of Broward County are for possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, trespassing and prostitution.
Deputies arrest 3 after police dog finds heroin, meth, pain killers inside car in Florida Keys
MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Deputies arrested two men and a woman after finding narcotics and marijuana inside of their car on Sunday in the Florida Keys, deputies said on Monday. A Monroe County Sheriff’s Office dog’s findings after a traffic stop in Big Pine Key include 36 grams of heroin, four grams of methamphetamine, and 14 Gabapentin pills. Deputies identified the three arrested as Nicole Webb, 33, and Cory Arthur, 43, of Big Pine Key, and James Barrs, 57, of Naples. Webb faces charges of possession of heroin and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. Arthur and Barrs face charges of trafficking in heroin and possession of methamphetamine.
Wisconsin man arrested in Keys told deputies he was Jesus Christ
A 36-year-old Milwaukee, Wisc., man was arrested after he tried to break a glass door of a gas station, then gave investigators a false name. A sheriff’s deputy responded to a Chevron gas station at approximately 4:15 a.m. after a 911 caller said that he heard loud banging coming from the gas station. The man told deputies that the suspect left when he realized someone was watching him. When he was stopped, Waychoft told the detective his name was David, then said it was David Christ, then Jesus Christ. When deputies went to the gas station, they said they found the door heavily damaged, but still intact.
Wild Florida: Volunteers help endangered deer in Florida Keys
MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – It was a group of Key Largo residents visiting Big Pine Key who noticed the female Key deer on Sunday. Valerie Preziosi, the founder of the nonprofit organization Save Our Key Deer, said her phone rang. Preziosi said a group of seven volunteers arrived and took turns by bicycle, car, and on foot and saturated the area to find the injured deer. An officer snared the deer and veterinarian Douglas Mader deftly removed the hook with his bare hands, before the stunned deer was released and pranced away. “This successful Key deer rescue is the first in many years achieved through a novel cooperation between federal, state and local resident entities for our native animals,” Preziosi wrote in an email.
Deputies told him he shouldn’t be driving. He sped away and started a chase, they say.
KEY WEST, Fla. – A Florida Keys man with a suspended license sped away from a deputy and started an early-morning chase on U.S. 1 before he was finally caught in Key West, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says. The sheriff’s office says a deputy was called about a suspicious person after 4 a.m. on Barry Lane on Little Torch Key and spotted Springer behind the wheel of a Lincoln Town Car that was blocking traffic. “Springer is known to Deputies from previous law enforcement encounters,” the agency said in a news release. “Deputy White informed Springer that he knows he’s not supposed to be driving as his license was suspended. Springer then sped away and turned southbound on U.S. 1.”Springer again refused to stop when spotted near Mile Marker 15, deputies say, and after spikes were deployed, Springer “continued driving into Key West on rims before finally stopping at the Circle K at North Roosevelt Boulevard and Kennedy Drive.”Springer was taken to jail.
Man driving stolen construction machinery in Keys tells deputies, ‘I like it’
When the deputy approached the driver inside the construction vehicle, he recognized Hawkins as someone he had seen walking just moments before along the same road. According to the deputy, Hawkins had trouble standing and appeared to be intoxicated. Hawkins also denied driving the machinery. Hawkins was charged with driving while under the influence, driving while under the influence with property damage, driving with a suspended license and criminal mischief. The company that owns the vehicle was called and they stated the grader was valued at $120,000, according to Monroe County Sheriff’s.
Woman accused of pawning goods stolen from man's trailer while he was in jail
A Big Pine Key woman was arrested Monday morning for pawning items that she stole from a man's trailer while he was in jail, authorities said. Linhardt said the son found the trailer door open and female belongings scattered throughout the home. The son reported that his father's Gibson guitar and case, Martin guitar and case, Fender guitar and case and a Gamo air rifle were all missing. The victim listed items of value inside his trailer for detectives, which included a flat-screen TV, Milwaukee tools and a computer. Adams Kidwell was taken into custody Monday on charges of fraud, burglary and grand theft.
