Keys man arrested after hitting victim in head with coral, robbing him

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – Deputies in the Florida Keys arrested a man accused of hitting another man in the head with a coral rock.

It happened on Friday at approximately 3:50 p.m. along Warbler Lane on Big Pine Key.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Newton Auer Brungart was arrested after allegedly striking the 60-year-old victim, who deputies found with cuts to his head and arm.

After a brief investigation, deputies found Burngart a short distance away with the victim’s bag, which contained his ID and personal items.

He was taken into custody on aggravated battery and theft charges.

There were no life-threatening injuries reported, deputies said.
