DANIA BEACH, Fla. — The two dogs accused of attacking a baby and her mother Friday night in Dania Beach are now in the care of Broward County Animal Care, according to authorities.

The dogs are Belgian Malinois, according to Animal Care. Officials also confirmed the dogs belong to the mother’s fiancé.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called around 6:30 p.m. Friday to an apartment complex near Southwest 28th Avenue and Griffin Road for a severe dog attack.

Animal Care officials said officers tried to contact the dogs’ owner Friday evening, but he did not return to the scene.

On Saturday, after Animal Care officers completed their investigation at the hospital, they went back to the apartment and confiscated both dogs, according to officials.

The dogs are now at the animal shelter as officials look into their histories. Deputies are continuing their investigation.

The police presence drew attention from neighbors, who were shocked by what happened.

“That’s terrible, man,” said Corey Clemson, who lives nearby. “I have a three-year-old son and I know dogs sometimes, anything can happen at any moment.”

As of the latest update, shelter officials said the baby remains in the ICU.

The mother was also injured while trying to protect her child.
