MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Several South Florida cities commemorated Memorial Day on Monday.

An event held outside of the Miami Beach Police Department, featured a wreath-laying ceremony, a 21-gun salute and a performance by the Girl Scouts to honor the sacrifices of fallen veterans.

“I’m a veteran, but I think of the fallen on this day more than anyone else, because it’s their day,” participant David Patlak said. “It’s the day to remember.”

The event was a reminder that despite being a global destination, Miami Beach is also a small, tight-knit community.

Elsewhere, Fort Lauderdale saw a three-mile march with flags representing military branches, with some carrying ruck packs symbolizing the weight of loss.

Pembroke Pines held a ceremony at Fletcher Park, named after the city’s first resident killed in the Vietnam War. A Margate ceremony included first responders.

In the Florida Keys, a saxophonist marked the start of the Memorial Day Murph on Big Pine Key.

In Key Largo, firefighters gathered in solidarity and displayed an American flag from ladder truck 25 along the Overseas Highway.

There was also a ceremony at Naval Air Station Key West.
