MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police arrested a Miami man on vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter charges Wednesday after they said he was driving at more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit when he struck and killed another driver on Coral Way in December.

Leonardo Remedios, 41, of Little Havana, was also driving more than 40 mph over the posted speed limit in west Miami-Dade when he crashed into the victim’s Nissan Altima and a third vehicle, authorities said.

According to a Miami-Dade Police Department arrest report, Remedios, driving a Volkswagen Tiguan, was barreling down Coral Way — also signed as Southwest 24th Street — in the county’s unincorporated Coral Terrace area just before midnight on Dec. 7 when he blew through a red light and struck the driver, who was turning left from the Palmetto Expressway.

“The catastrophic impact caused the victim’s vehicle to rotate a half turn counterclockwise, (travel) over the concrete center median onto the westbound traffic and (it struck) the left rear side of (a) third vehicle,” an MDPD detective wrote in the report.

Authorities didn’t identify the victim in the report.

According to MDPD, toxicology tests revealed that Remedios had a blood alcohol content of 0.273% at a blood draw taken just before 2 a.m. at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he was being treated for minor injuries. That’s nearly three-and-a-half times the legal limit.

Internal vehicle data revealed that Remedios was driving 81 mph in a 40 mph zone, the report states.

Remedios, a Cuban national, was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $75,000 bond as of Thursday afternoon.
