Massive water main break floods portion of downtown Miami Lakes

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – A water main break flooded a key thoroughfare in Miami Lakes early Monday evening.

It happened along Northwest 67th Avenue near New Barn Road in Miami Lakes’ downtown area, closing a portion of the roadway.

The break caused a sinkhole to form, trapping an SUV with the driver still inside.

Images from Sky 10 showed an SUV stuck in the floodwaters. Miami-Dade police were at the scene blocking traffic.

The driver, who did not want to be identified, said she was heading to work at the Ale House across the street.

She told Local 10′s Sanela Sabovic that the water was ankle deep, but drivers were able to pass through, until her SUV became trapped in the sinkhole.

A town spokesperson said a contractor performing work along Northwest 67th Avenue broke the main.

The spokesperson said officials from Miami-Dade’s water and sewer department arrived just before 5:45 p.m.

Northwest 67th Avenue reopened Tuesday morning. It’s not clear how much the break will cost the town.
