Judge orders Key Biscayne gymnastics coach held without bond on sex crimes charges

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – A Miami-Dade judge ordered a gymnastics coach accused of committing sex crimes against two students during and after lessons in Key Biscayne remain held without bond Thursday.

Oscar Olea, 38, is accused of victimizing two teenage girls he taught in the late 2000s and early 2010s while working at a gym called American Gymsters, which was located at 328 Crandon Blvd.

He’s facing two counts engaging in a sex act with a child by a person who is in a position of familial or custodial authority.

Local 10 News reported Olea’s arrest Thursday and outlined allegations of grooming, explicit messages and sexual abuse contained in two arrest warrants.

Key Biscayne police are encouraging more victims to come forward.

American Gymsters, Olea’s former employer, is now located at the Key Biscayne Community Center.

Key Biscayne’s village manager sent a statement to Local 10 News regarding the facility:

“We are thankful for the hard work of our Police Department as they thoroughly investigated all leads pertaining to this case. We also appreciate the support of our partners at Miami Dade County and the State Attorney’s Office. Most important, we want to recognize the brave victims and witnesses who came forward with pertinent information. We could not have done this without them.

We have and will continue to do background checks on our employees, contractors, the contractors’ employees, and our volunteers paying particular attention to those who work in our community center and parks in proximity to children.

Key Biscayne will continue to host American Gymsters. They are a service provider to the Village that went through a thorough solicitation process which included, among many things, references and background checks. If any concerns arise about the company, we will immediately address it with their leadership and make the necessary decisions at that time.”
