KEY WEST, Fla. – A history teacher and athletic coach was found dead on Saturday at Key West High School, his alma mater.

Monroe County Schools Superintendent Theresa Axford identified the teacher as Dexter Butler and reported that he had drowned after his keys fell down a drain, the Key West Weekly Newspaper reported.

“He was reaching for them, lost his balance, and fell face first, then drowned in 18 inches of water in the drain — really a tragedy on many levels,” Axford told the weekly.

In 2022, a weekly reporter wrote a profile on him describing him as a 36-year-old father of two who had been the captain of both the baseball and football teams at the high school where he returned to work after playing baseball through college and having a career in banking.
