Detectives’ days-long dig in backyard a mystery to neighbors in Pompano Beach

BSO: Deputies conducting ‘active and ongoing criminal investigation’

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Residents of a Pompano Beach neighborhood are waiting for answers as to why detectives have dug up the backyard of a home.

A Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said Monday that the activity at 2016 NE 54th St. is part of an “active and ongoing criminal investigation,” but authorities wouldn’t elaborate further.

The street divides Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach, where it is known as Southeast 15th Street.

Video from Sky 10 shows deputies, set up under a tent, using buckets and shovels in the yard, along with a backhoe.

Two neighbors told Local 10 News that deputies have been at the home for days.

“Last Wednesday, actually the medical examiner’s vehicle was out here and they pulled out multiple tubs, which I’m assuming was bodies or remains and it’s just been progressing,” neighbor Bruce Reid said. “They had a digging crew out here. They’ve had multiple and now they have the backhoe out here, but nobody’s talking to anyone.”

BSO officials have not confirmed those details.

Deputies cleared the scene just before 4 p.m. and a family was seen going in and out of the home.

They declined to comment about the investigation.
