CityPlace Doral police-involved shooting: Here is what Miami-Dade police reported

Detective Alvaro Zabaleta releases information on police-involved shooting

DORAL, Fla. – A man took out a gun and fatally shot a security guard early Saturday morning at a business at CityPlace in Doral, according to Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Two Doral police officers who were working at the business discharged their firearms and one fatally shot the gunman, according to Zabaleta, who talked to reporters during a news conference.

“Officers that were working at the commercial establishment at the time immediately responded, and there was an exchange of gunfire,” Zabaleta said.

A woman, five men, and a police officer were injured during the shootout, according to Zabaleta, who added that the officer suffered a gunshot wound “to the lower extremity.”

Zabaleta said two of the civilians injured were in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, and the other four were in stable condition.

Zabaleta said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was investigating the Doral police-involved shooting and it was too early in the investigation to know how the six civilians were injured.

“Unfortunately, the security guard lost his life while he was performing his duties, and of course, our heart goes out to that family,” Zabaleta said.
