Miami-Dade police officers receive new safety gear

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ Officers with the Miami-Dade Police Department have a new way to keep themselves safe.

Itā€™s called PEG ā€” protective enhancement gear ā€” and itā€™s a first-of-its-kind technology.

MDPD will be the first police department in the nation to use the gear.

Itā€™s flexible, light and also fireproof.

The suit has capabilities of energy disbursement, meaning if an officer receives blunt force trauma, it provides better protection to vital organs.

The new gear is currently used by Israeli police.

The deputy consul-general of Israel was there for the official unveiling in Miami-Dade, alongside former County Commissioner Sally Heyman and law enforcement officials.

These officers put their lives on the line every day, and this new technology is just an added layer in making sure these officers can not only do their jobs, but come home safely.

The total price tag for the new gear came in at around $69,000 for just over 100 units.

The hope is to buy more for other departments in South Florida.
