MIAMI — A 9-year-old boy was airlifted from the Bahamas to South Florida on Wednesday after suffering serious injuries in a dog attack, according to investigators.

U.S. Coast Guard crews surrounded the child on a gurney moments after emergency responders brought him to Miami from the island of Bimini.

The boy suffered multiple bite wounds to his legs, face, head and one of his arms, according to police in the Bahamas. The injuries were significant enough that he needed to be transferred to Miami for treatment.

Doctors and nurses at Jackson Memorial Hospital have been caring for the child, where he has reportedly undergone several hours of surgery.

Investigators say the attack happened in broad daylight on a beach in Bimini while the child was alone collecting sand.

A witness was able to scare the animals away, according to investigators.

The child then made his way back to the apartment where he and his parents were staying, leading to the first call for help.
