Students at Miami’s Epiphany Catholic School win Local 10′s eARTh Day Art Contest

MIAMI – For the seventh year, Local 10 News’ eARTh Day Art Contest showcased the creativity, and love for the environment, of so many South Florida art students.

Since 2018, the contest has awarded $27,000 to six schools across South Florida.

The competition was tough, with so many beautiful works of art, but Monday morning, Local 10′s Kristi Krueger headed to Miami’s Epiphany Catholic School to surprise this year’s winner.

The winning work of art was a stunning seven-foot piece titled “Mangrove Delight” and it’s proudly displayed in the parent pick-up line.

It is made with 100% recycled items.

Art teacher Carolina Hernandez said her students brought the trash to class and together they turned it into art.

Hernandez wanted to combine two things she loves -- art and boating.

“I’m very passionate about the water,” she said. “We need to preserve our waterways and keep them clean for future generations.”

Hernandez has been touching the lives of those future generations for 22 years.

It’s clear this latest project was something both educational and inspirational for the third, fourth, and fifth grade students.

Art contest sponsor Publix provided Hernandez and her students with a $4,500 prize to purchase more art supplies.
