BSO: Broward deputy struck and killed suspect lying on the road

BSO probe into fatal deputy-involved crash continues

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office reported a 24-year-old deputy struck and killed a 28-year-old pedestrian — who turned out to be a suspect — during a crash early Saturday morning in Pompano Beach.

Deputies identified the pedestrian as Jamil Moreland, of Fort Lauderdale, and the driver as 24-year-old Deputy Wyatt Jennesse, who has been with the department since Feb. 27, 2023.

Jennesse was responding to a lewd and lascivious report near North Powerline Road. According to BSO, he was traveling westbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard before the crash at Northwest 15th Avenue.

“Moreland was laying or in a crouched position in the roadway when the deputy’s vehicle struck him within the left thru lane,” Claudinne Caro, a BSO spokeswoman, wrote.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel pronounced Moreland dead after the deputy called for help.

“Investigators later confirmed the pedestrian was the individual related to the call for service the deputy was responding to,” Caro wrote.

According to Caro, investigators reported the deputy was not impaired or speeding, and a mechanical malfunction was not a contributing factor. The cause of the crash remained under investigation on Saturday afternoon.
